 Walleyes
The Chippewa Flowage was dealing with ice issues very close to the “fishing opener”—
Current water temperatures are in the 41 to 46 degree range and warming slowly-
Anglers are finding walleyes to be scattered, in the shallows, and seemingly in a pre-spawn mode-
I have observed a few walleye limits (3 fish and no size limit) over the week end some guests doing well during the early morning and evening bite—
Generally folks are not finding the walleye to be in the typical spots from past years---scattered walleye in cold water may require a search tactic and go shallow more than usual-
I have caught walleye using a lead head jig and large fat head minnow into the shallows over rock piles along shorelines and off of floating bogs jammed into sand/rock banks-
Smithwicks and Rapalas, silver in color, have attracted some good size walleye at dark-
Walleye bite patterns will change as the water warms and perhaps a spawn will produce a great week end of fishing for anglers on the Chippewa Flowage-
The DNR has Fyke nets placed along river channel shorelines (fish count/size/sex), small island openings, and around openings to creeks----look for a white flag making these net locations and be cautious-
