Annual Treeland Premier Musky Fly Fishing Championship
The 8th Annual Treeland Premier Musky Fly Fishing Championship was held ON: October 6th – 8th, 2022
This past weekend Treeland Resort hosted the 7th Annual Treeland Premier Musky Fly Fishing Championship. 110 anglers fished local lakes and rivers in search of the trophy musky. Anglers battled a cold front, high winds and low water while also enjoying beautiful fall colors and sun. A total of 31 musky were registered ranging in size from 25.00 inches up to 47.00 inches. The bulk of the catches were made on the Flambeau River and Chippewa River.
As is tradition, the tournament kicked off with a spirited casting contest, in which entrants have three attempts to land their fly in a hoop. After six rounds of tight competition, Hayward’s very own local brew master, Jason Rasmussen took home the grand prize of a Chippewa River Custom Rod.
Anglers woke up to a frosty morning on Friday with temperatures around 32 degrees at start time. The fish were as fickle as the weather but still managed to register 19 musky from 25.00 inches up to 47.00 inches long; the majority caught in the last three hours of the day! Largest fish of the day went to Max Monfort from Portage, WI with a hefty 47.00 inch fall beauty! This fish scored 23 points and was enough to land his team of “Sparky and the Broke Boys”, Max Monfort, Hunter Strapon and Jeremiah Bleich in second place. Rounding out the top spot after day one was the brotherly team of O’Pros Bros. with eight fish for a total of 24.5 points. David, Mike and Aaron Jacobson registered a 34.50, 30.00, 28.00, 25.50, 25.50, 25.00, 25.00, 25.00!
Saturday was another chilly start but at least the sun was shining. Anglers registered 12 more fish from 25 inches up to 40 inches long. Nick Anderson had the biggest fish of the day with a 40 inch musky.
Coming in third place, was Team Trandsucer Sledder Musky Getter, made up of Nick and Peter Anderson and Ward Denaway. They registered a 37.5 inch musky and a 40 inch musky, netting 29.5 points and taking home $880 in cold, hard, cash!
The second place team with 30.5 points was O’Pros Bros., David, Mike and Aaron Jacobson. They registered a total of 11 fish ranging in size from 25.00 inches to 34.5 inches. Taking home $1760 in prize money!
The first place title and $2640 in cold, hard, cash was Sparky and the Broke Boys, Max Monfort, Hunter Strapon and Jeremiah Bleich. They registered a 38.5 inch and a 47.00 inch. They earned a total of 37.5 points and a spot at the top of the leaderboard!
Biggest Fish Winner was Max Monfort, with his beautiful 47.00” musky! Aside from winning the prestigious title, biggest musky also netted an additional $1760 and a custom musky art creation from MN Fly Tool!
