How Did Chipmunk Island Get Its Name?

As we were told by Oscar Treland, the cabin located on the point of Deerfoot Resort was a speakeasy during the days of Prohibition. A group of gentlemen were fishing the Chippewa Flowage and boated over to the speakeasy for some moonshine one night. After they’d had their fill they went back to camp on what is now Chipmunk Island. One of the gentlemen was clearly over served and began hallucinating; in his state he believed that he was being attacked by thousands of chipmunks and his buddies could not calm him down. In an attempt to rid himself of the siege of the chipmunks he ran into the water and tragically drown. Let Chipmunk Island be a lesson to us all!
