2020 Fly Fishing Championship Results
This past weekend Treeland Resort hosted the 5th Annual Treeland Premier Musky Fly Fishing Championship. 64 anglers fished local lakes and rivers in search of the trophy musky. With abnormally warm temperatures, high winds and low water the tournament fishing was much slower than previous years. A total of fifteen musky were registered ranging in size from 25” up to 41”. Majority of the catches were made on the Flambeau River and Chippewa River.
To kick off the tournament, Just Encase Fly Boxes sponsored a casting contest, entrants have three attempts to land their fly in a hoop in hopes of taking home the grand prize, a Just Encase Predator Fly Box. Del Kauss from St. Paul, MN took home the gold, beating out five other anglers in the finals!
Friday morning anglers woke up to 60 degrees and sun; temperatures continued climbing throughout the day and topped out at 78 degrees. A beautiful day to enjoy being outside and taking in the lush fall colors. While the weather cooperated, the fish certainly did not with only 7 registered musky ranging in size from 26.5” up to 41”. Charlie Forrest started out his morning strong with a beautiful 36.5” tiger musky from the Flambeau River on a Bonnie Fly. This wasn’t big enough to hold the lead as Aaron Przybylski, a member of Bob Mitchell’s Fly Shop Team landed a 41” also on the Flambeau River on a purple fly at 1pm.
Saturday the sun was shining and temperatures hung out at a perfect fall 58 degrees. Anglers registered 8 more fish from 25” up to 40.5”. Josh Mattila, from Hudson, WI had the biggest fish of the day with a 40.5” caught on the Chippewa River.
Coming in third place, was Team Fast Eddie’s, made up of Eddie Rivard (New Brighton, MN) & Eric Fast (Falcon Heights, MN). They registered a 26.5”, 28.5” and 33” musky, netting 13 points and taking home $500 in cold, hard, cash!
The second place team, with17.5 Points was Bob Mitchell’s Fly Shop, made up of Robert Hawkins (St. Paul, MN), Joey Oesterle (Minneapolis, MN), Aaron Przybylski (Stillwater, MN). Aaron’s 41”musky caught on Friday was worth enough points to secure the team a 2nd place finish and $1000 in prize money!
Taking home the first place title and $1510 in cold, hard, cash was Team VGS made up of Josh Mattila (Lake Elmo, MN, Charlie Wiemerslage (Hudson, WI) Peter Goodwin (Hudson, WI). They registered a 28” musky on Friday worth 2 points, and a 40.5” musky on Saturday worth 16.5 points, earning a total of 18.5 points and a spot at the top of the leaderboard!
Biggest Fish Winner was Aaron Przybylski, with his beautiful 41” musky! Aside from winning the prestigious title, biggest musky also netted an additional $1000!
The Musky Fool Fly Fishing Company donated a Chippewa River Custom Muskysaber Fly Rod, valued at $375. Entrants bought tickets for a chance to win the rod with 100% of the proceeds to benefit Fishing Has No Boundaries. A goal of $1000 was set, not only did they reach that goal, the goal was exceeded and $1,230.00 was raised for the organization!
